Kayaking is a fun and exciting hobby, however, it is important to stay safe when out on the water. Here are five tips for kayak safety.

  1. Bring Proper Safety Gear: One of the most important steps in a safe kayaking trip is to have the correct equipment. At the bare minimum, you should have a personal flotation device, a whistle, a communication device such as a cellphone or VHF radio, a bilge pump, a spare paddle, a paddle float, a towline, and a headlamp in case it gets dark.
  2. Wear the Right Clothing: When kayaking, water is all around you, so you have to be properly dressed for the occasion. Depending on the water temperature, hypothermia can be a real danger, and you have to be prepared. If the water is below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, you should wear a drysuit or wetsuit under your clothing to stay safe if you end up in the water.
  3. Go With Friends: Even an experienced kayaker can benefit from going with a friend. With a friend, you increase your margin for error and if you have an issue, a friend can help you far faster than waiting for a rescue. Also, going out with a friend or a small group is more fun than going alone in many cases, as you get to share in the adventure. Also, be sure to keep your group or friends close as this improves safety.
  4. Be Aware of the Weather: Check the weather before you head out and be sure to stay aware of it during your trip. By watching the weather, you can know when it’s time to leave, such as when an unexpected storm is coming in. A smartphone app or a VHF radio’s weather channel will keep you up-to-date with the local conditions.
  5. Inform Others About Your Trip: Be sure to tell someone about your paddle plan, including where you are going, what you plan to do, who you are going with, and how long you plan to be on the water. This way, if something goes wrong, somebody will know to look for you and inform the authorities if needed.

Kayaking can be an excellent way to spend the afternoon, get some exercise, and enjoy the great outdoors. By being prepared and focused on your safety, you can ensure you have a good time without worrying about your well-being.
