Planning to visit Venice, FL? This gorgeous town is filled with fun things to do, and no visit is complete without taking in some of the local Florida marine life. Here are just a few of the majestic creatures you can lay eyes on as you enjoy your trip to the Sunshine State.

Manatees

Manatees are the gentle giants of the sea, and they’re just one of the many types of Florida marine life drawn to the waters of Venice, FL during the winter months. Manatees are known as “sea cows” because they constantly graze on underwater vegetation, mainly near the water’s edge. For this reason, they’re pretty easy to spot as they’re enjoying a healthy meal.

During the wintertime, you’ll be able to see these wondrous animals without even entering the water. As you stroll through Humphris Park from the months of December to February, there’s a good chance you’ll catch a glimpse of a manatee or two right from the shore. If you want an even closer encounter with one of these sea cows, you can get into the water near the North Jetty Beach. While these animals are harmless to humans, keep your distance when you’re in the water and let them go about their day.

Loggerhead sea turtles

If you’re planning a trip to Venice, FL between the months of May and October, be sure to look out for the loggerhead sea turtle. During this time of year, these heavily armored yet adorable creatures return to the beaches where they were born to lay eggs of their own. They’re typically found near the beaches of Sarasota, but remember that your actions have an impact on the success of their egg-laying efforts.

When observing these animals—and all Florida marine life in general—be sure to give them plenty of distance and don’t distract them from their task. There’s a lights-out policy in effect on area beaches during this time of year, since artificial lights can distract and confuse hatchlings who are trying to enter the water. Be responsible and properly shield any lights you have on by closing blinds and turning off outdoor lights, and—equally as important—always pick up your trash so the baby turtles can get to the water without encountering obstructions.

Dolphins

Catching dolphins in action as they frolic and play in crystal-clear waters is a must-see attraction when visiting Venice, FL. The North Jetty Beach is the place to be if you want to see these friendly bottle-nosed creatures jumping and enjoying life in the water. The best time to view dolphins at play is in the mornings and early afternoons, but it’s not uncommon to spot a few at any time of day. As an added bonus, it’s also a great place to pick up some shells as you wait for the dolphins to appear!

Many visitors say that one of the highlights of a trip to Venice, FL is getting up close and personal with Florida marine life. Contact Cool Breeze Boats & Jet Ski Rentals to learn more about how you can get the best views of these majestic creatures during your trip.
